Week in Review

The King hard at work

Ah...another great week in our house of boys. We finally got Writing Tales and Growing with Grammar so we added those to our schedule with much rejoicing. Ok, maybe not so much rejoicing, but The Computer has decided he likes both of them. He was especially happy because he saw that one of the stories he gets to study and do an imitation of is King Alfred and the Cakes. We read that one over the summer while following a little of Ambleside Online's reading schedule.

For Geography, we finished up our basic unit on maps and globes. The boys enjoyed drawing their hand on a 1 inch grid and then copying it onto a 1/2 inch grid. It's been a while since having such teeny hands in our household. We were supposed to follow a map to walk somewhere today, (Friday) but alas, the temperature is supposed to reach 103 today. I think we'll drive instead.

In Science, we talked a bit about plants and how they transport food and water. I was actually organized enough this week to do the little science experiment:

Step 1 - Remove the xylem from the celery. Actually, this was very interesting because the xylem really are like little noodles.

Step 2 - Place the celery in different glasses of water. We put the xylem-less (is that a word?) in red water and the xylem-filled (is that a word?) in green water. For the fun of it, we put a third celery in no water

Step 3 - Wait. While waiting, eat some celery with peanut butter and raisins.

Step 4 - Check the results. The boys were able to see what happens when the celery no longer has the xylem.

The Computer did a pretty good job on keeping up with guitar and piano. We need to start The Librarian on piano soon. He's been begging to get going with it and it's just time.

Fearless Flyer did what he does best...learn through play. He's now got 11 letters under his belt. The Librarian basically taught himself to read when he was younger and The Computer picked up on it quickly. However, Fearless Flyer is a much more physical child and just learns differently. It's going to be a fun road, I think.

I have never outgrown my fascination with celery and food coloring! It look like you had a great week. The hand/grid looks really interesting.
